Tesla Struggles to Maintain Momentum
Tesla’s European registrations fell sharply in July, dropping 40% compared with the same month last year. Data from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) showed 8,837 Tesla vehicles registered across the EU, the UK, and the European Free Trade Association, down from 14,769 in July 2024. Despite updates to the Model Y, the company continues to face mounting competition.
BYD’s Market Growth Surges
BYD saw its registrations jump to 13,503 vehicles last month, more than tripling the 4,151 units sold a year ago. Its market share rose to 1.2%, surpassing Tesla’s 0.8%. The Chinese automaker, known for affordable vehicles, has expanded aggressively across Europe and earlier this year overtook Tesla in regional sales, according to JATO Dynamics.
UK Incentives and Industry Trends
The UK government has introduced new subsidies to boost electric vehicle uptake. Ford will be the first manufacturer to access the maximum £3,750 grant on two models, while 26 additional vehicles qualify for £1,500. Discounts apply to cars priced under £37,000 and are automatically applied at purchase. Meanwhile, UK vehicle production increased by 5.6% in July, marking a second month of growth. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders cautioned that the sector faces continued uncertainty due to weak consumer confidence and unstable trade conditions. Across Europe, 1.011 million fully electric cars were registered in the first seven months of 2025, accounting for 15.6% of the market, while hybrids continued to dominate with 2.255 million units, driven by growth in France, Spain, Germany, and Italy.
