Afghanistan Reaffirms Territorial Integrity
The Taliban has dismissed former President Donald Trump’s call for the return of Bagram Air Base, reiterating that Afghan land will remain under its control. Chief of Staff Fasihuddin Fitrat emphasized that no portion of the country’s territory will be surrendered, highlighting the group’s commitment to protecting national sovereignty.
Exchange Between Trump and Taliban Officials
Trump issued a warning suggesting consequences if Afghanistan did not comply with his request to hand back the strategically important airbase, which U.S. forces vacated in 2021. In response, Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid called on the United States to take a more practical approach, stressing Afghanistan’s focus on constructive international relations and adherence to the 2020 Doha Agreement, which ensures foreign non-interference.
Strategic Role of Bagram Air Base
Located about 40 miles north of Kabul, Bagram Air Base served as a central hub for American military operations for nearly twenty years. Since the U.S. withdrawal, control of the facility has been in the hands of the Taliban. Its strategic position near regional borders continues to make it a significant factor in Afghanistan’s security landscape.
The Taliban’s stance underscores its determination to maintain sovereignty and assert control over key military sites, even in the face of international pressure and ongoing economic challenges.
