Jury Returns Unanimous Decision
A federal jury in Fort Pierce, Florida, convicted Ryan Wesley Routh on September 23, 2025, for attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump. The 59-year-old North Carolina man represented himself in court and was found guilty after only two hours of jury deliberation. As the verdict was announced, he tried to harm himself with a pen, leading security officers to restrain and remove him from the courtroom.
Alleged Attack at Trump International
Prosecutors told jurors that Routh had carefully plotted an attack at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach. He allegedly brought a loaded SKS-style rifle and waited by the perimeter fence, aiming at the area where Trump was playing. A Secret Service agent noticed the weapon, fired a warning shot, and forced Routh to flee before he was eventually apprehended.
Awaiting Sentencing in December
Routh’s convictions include attempted assassination of a presidential candidate, assaulting a federal officer, and multiple firearm-related offenses. Attorney General Pam Bondi hailed the verdict as a firm stance against political violence. Trump, responding later, said justice had been served and thanked those involved in the case. Routh will return to court for sentencing on December 18, where he could face life imprisonment.
