Rescue teams in eastern Libya recovered five decomposed bodies believed to be migrants.
Authorities found the remains 550 kilometers south of Tobruk in the Great Sand Sea.
The Red Crescent moved the bodies to Tobruk, calling the tragedy part of the deadly “death journey.”
Abreen, a local aid group, said the victims were likely Sudanese and shared photos of the operation.
Libya’s Role in Migration Routes
Libya borders six countries and lies on the Mediterranean, making it a major route for migrants to Europe.
Many flee wars and poverty, risking desert crossings and perilous sea voyages.
Drownings are frequent. In December, 61 migrants, including women and children, drowned off Zuwara.
In May, seven Sudanese migrants died in the desert after their vehicle broke down and supplies ran out.
Rising Migration Pressure on Europe
The IOM estimated 787,000 migrants and refugees lived in Libya in 2024.
The UNHCR reported 32,400 crossed from Libya to Europe in 2021, double the 2020 total.
In April, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed adding 30,000 Frontex staff.
EU officials said the boost would help strengthen control over Europe’s external borders.
