LONG BEACH, Calif. — A significant stack of shipping containers toppled from a cargo ship at the Port of Long Beach on Tuesday, leading to a temporary suspension of operations and an emergency response.
Authorities reported that about 67 containers fell or shifted from the vessel Mississippi while it was berthed at Pier G. The incident occurred around midday, and no injuries were reported.
A Unified Command, including representatives from the Port of Long Beach and the U.S. Coast Guard, was quickly deployed to manage the incident, secure the area, and monitor environmental conditions. Pier G operations were paused during the response.
“The safety of port workers and the surrounding waters remains our priority,” officials said. The Coast Guard confirmed the establishment of a containment zone to prevent hazards from spreading.
The cause of the stack failure remains under investigation, and it has not been confirmed if any of the containers carried hazardous goods.
The Mississippi, operated by an international shipping line, had recently arrived from Asia and was scheduled to offload and reload cargo before departing later this week.
Cleanup and recovery efforts are ongoing, with port officials planning to reopen Pier G once the area is deemed safe.
