Firefighters, inspectors respond after early-morning blast
An explosion inside a chimney and boiler shaft led to the partial collapse of a New York City Housing Authority tower in the Bronx on Wednesday morning, according to officials. The 20-story structure at the Mitchel Houses on Alexander Avenue shed large sections of its exterior, sending rubble onto the surrounding sidewalks and roadways.
No injuries but residents evacuated
Authorities confirmed that no residents were hurt in the incident, though several apartments were cleared as a precaution. Streets around the building were closed off while the Fire Department and city engineers evaluated the site. Gas service was shut down by Con Edison, and NYCHA began coordinating support for those who could not remain in their homes.
Possible gas leak under investigation
Investigators are reviewing whether a gas leak in the heating system may have caused the blast. Structural specialists and city inspectors are also examining maintenance records and past safety reports connected to the building. Officials pledged a comprehensive inquiry and said residents should avoid the area until stabilization work and cleanup are complete.
