Patrick Bamford has signed with Sheffield United, just seven months after he led a derogatory chant about the club’s manager, Chris Wilder, during Leeds United’s promotion celebrations.
The 32-year-old striker, a free agent since leaving Leeds in August, has agreed to a short-term deal with the Championship side until January, as Wilder looks to boost the league’s lowest-scoring attack.
Bamford and Wilder have a long history of rivalry dating back to their 2018–19 promotion battle, when Wilder called the forward “a muppet.” However, tensions have since eased — Bamford and then-Leeds boss Daniel Farke personally phoned Wilder to apologise after the viral chant.
Wilder said at the time he held “no issue” with Bamford, calling their exchange “respectful” and adding that such banter was “part and parcel of the game.”
Bamford, who earned one England cap, made 18 appearances for Leeds last season but has struggled with injuries in recent years. He now joins United in hopes of reviving his career and helping them escape the relegation zone.
