The United Nations General Assembly approved a resolution on Friday supporting the creation of a Palestinian state.
The measure promotes a two-state solution, condemns Hamas’s October 7 attack, and criticizes Israel’s siege on Gaza.
Member States Deliver Overwhelming Support
Out of 193 UN members, 142 voted in favor, 10 opposed, and 12 abstained from the New York Declaration.
France and Saudi Arabia presented the resolution, which outlines Palestinian Authority control over all Palestinian territories.
It also calls for forming a transitional administration once a ceasefire in Gaza begins.
Demands for Disarmament and Hostage Release
The declaration requires Hamas to end its rule in Gaza, surrender its weapons, and release all hostages.
It stresses the Palestinian Authority must assume governing responsibilities across Palestinian territories.
Proposal for International Protection
The resolution suggests a UN-backed mission to protect Palestinian civilians and ensure safety for both Israelis and Palestinians.
It envisions the mission supporting peaceful transfer of authority, monitoring the ceasefire, and overseeing the path toward lasting peace.
